At a massive awards show, anything can go wrong. From wardrobe malfunctions to teleprompter failures, there are a myriad of things that can potentially throw a wrench in the meticulously planned proceedings.
However, perhaps the most memorable and cringe-worthy example of an awards show mishap happened in 2017 at the Academy Awards, when the Best Picture award was mistakenly awarded to La La Land, only to be corrected moments later and given to the actual winner, Moonlight.
Fast forward to the 2023 BAFTA Film Awards, where a similar mix-up occurred, albeit on a smaller scale. Kerry Condon and Carey Mulligan were both nominated for the Supporting Actress category, with Condon nominated for her character in The Banshees of Inisherin and Mulligan for her role in She Said.
As the tension in the room reached its peak, last year’s Best Supporting Actor winner, Troy Kotsur, was tasked with announcing the winner.
After a dramatic pause, Kotsur announced Kerry Condon as the winner, prompting cheers and applause from the audience.
However, as the sign language interpreter providing voiceover to the audience announced the winner as Carey Mulligan, confusion began to spread throughout the room. It soon became clear that there had been a mistake, with the interpreter having misinterpreted the winner’s name.
Rectifying the Error
As the show’s producers frantically scrambled to rectify the error, the tension in the room reached an all-time high. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, it was announced that Kerry Condon was indeed the rightful winner of the award.
While the mistake may not have been as high-profile as the La La Land fiasco of years past, it served as a stark reminder of just how easy it is for things to go awry at an awards show, no matter how much planning and preparation has gone into the event.
Of course, in the magnificent scheme of things, the mix-up was a relatively minor one. Both Condon and Mulligan gave outstanding performances in their respective roles, and both actresses were surely honored to be nominated in the first place.
Nevertheless, the moment serves as a reminder that, no matter how glamorous the event, at the end of the day, it’s the people involved who truly matter. Whether it’s the nominees, the presenters, or the audience members, it’s the passion and dedication of these individuals that truly make the awards show experience memorable.
Condon emerged victorious in the Supporting Actress category at the BAFTA awards, triumphing over other notable nominees such as Angela Bassett for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Jamie Lee Curtis for Everything, Everywhere All at Once, and Hong Chau for The Whale. This is a significant achievement for Condon, who is also in the roster for an Oscar this year for her performance in Banshees.
However, her journey towards winning the prestigious award is not over yet. She will once again go head-to-head with the same set of nominees, as well as Stephanie Hsu from Everything, Everywhere All at Once, at the 95th Academy Awards, which is set to commence next month.
