Director Ron Howard Wants to Adapt ‘Backdraft’ for TV

Adapting movies into television series is a popular trend in the entertainment industry, and director Ron Howard has made the leap to the small screen with many of his projects.

However, if Howard could choose which movie to adapt next, he’d pick 1991’s Backdraft.

Backdraft is a movie starring Kurt Russell and William Baldwin as two firefighter brothers who are forced to work together when a dangerous arsonist comes to Chicago. It is known for a violent and dangerous fire sequence that was captured on camera inside.

In a recent interview with EW, Howard said, “Backdraft would be really good. Backdraft would be fun. You could get the scope and the intensity that we had to do all in-camera — now we could do it efficiently and safely.”

A television adaptation of Backdraft, in the director’s opinion, would make it possible to record the intense fire sequences in a more effective and secure manner. Technology advancements would make it possible to create spectacular and realistic fire scenes without endangering the actors or crew.

“We were kind of on the borderline there when you throw the safety question into what we were doing,” he stated. “I was so relieved when we wrapped. But now I believe we could tackle it and be just as ambitious visually and be a little safer.”

Howard: A Hollywood Icon and Potential Adaptations

Ron Howard is a well-known and respected name in Hollywood, known for his work as a director, producer and actor.

One of his most successful endeavors as a producer was the adaptation of the 1989 film Parenthood into a hit TV series for NBC. The show ran for six seasons from 2010 to 2015 and was produced by Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment.

The series was created by Jason Katims, who also worked on Howard’s beloved series Friday Night Lights.

In recent times, he served as executive producer on another one of his iconic 1980s titles, Lucasfilm’s Willow.

The series received a new lease on life on Disney+, with the first season introducing the original character of Willow alongside the children of the heroes from the 1988 movie.

Howard has a long list of credits to his name, and many of his titles could be ripe for new life on streaming platforms or network television. One title that Howard believes would be a natural fit for this environment is Backdraft.

The 1991 film, which Howard directed and produced, tells the story of two brothers who are firefighters and the dangerous situations they face on the job. With the popularity of shows like Chicago Fire and 9-1-1, a Backdraft series could be a hit with audiences.

“It’s a great world and there have been some shows around firehouses,” he contemplated. “There’s something about a family of firefighters.”

But it doesn’t mean that it’s already in development.

“We’re not actively working on it,” Howard adds. “Although Brian Grazer talks about it from time to time, so maybe one of these days.”
