The Sana Orphanage is dedicated to transforming its vision of making a difference in the lives of children into action by providing basic human needs to the people’s hope for the future. In a nutshell, the Sana Orphanage is a tax-exempt, independent, non-political, non-profit, and non-government organization that provides assistance to the poor and needy children of Afghanistan. It is located in Kandahar, Afghanistan and is run by Dr. Hamidullah. 

With the support and help of Americans and Afghan Americans, this charitable institution aims to help Afghan children reclaim the hope they once held. Sana Orphanage provides excellent care in diverse fields of child care, most specifically in orphan services and education and vocational training. It serves impoverished, handicapped, abused and orphaned children in the city.

Operated by a team that shares a genuine passion for underserved children, the Sana Orphanage is well-equipped with facilities that adequately sustain orphans. Most significantly, it is clothed with amenities that accommodate every child’s learning stages. In addition, the Sana Orphanage provides highly qualified teachers to teach reading, writing, and mathematics, as well as language instruction in Farsi, Pashto and English. Proving to be dedicated to transforming its purpose-driven vision into action, it also focuses on vocational training that helps children find jobs in the future.

Recently, the Sana Orphanage published a book entitled Love in Despair to give a voice to the voiceless children and provide a more intimate recounting of their personal stories. Written by Shughla Karzai, Love in Despair grants its users a deep and personal look into Shughla’s journey of opening Sana Orphanage. 

The book does an exceptional job of educating its readers on the many struggles of children living in war-torn Afghanistan. Divided into two parts, Love in Despair gives readers a glimpse into the lives of the children at Sana and the exceptional origins of the humble orphanage.
