New Frontiers in Figure Skating, Drazdova Leads the Way

For decades, triples were the peak of figure skating prowess. However, since Kurt Browning landed the first-ever quadruple toe loop in 1988, skaters at all levels – from professionals and high-level amateurs to ambitious beginners – have reached for more, more, more. Nowadays, triples are the norm, while quadruples are the next frontier.

Pioneering coach Victoria Drazdova is at the forefront of this sea-change – and her innovative off-ice training techniques are helping skaters worldwide achieve remarkable results at amazing speeds. Drazdova focuses on off-ice training and places particular importance on the biomechanics of multirotational jumps, some of the most difficult maneuvers in the sport of figure skating. She has leveraged her years of coaching practice and coupled it with a review and analysis of scientific and methodological literature that included pedagogical and mathematical observations of her athletes’ jumps, take-off lengths, skid lengths, skid widths, jump lengths, hip flexion at take-off, take-off angle, vertical velocity at take-off, horizontal velocity at take-off, jump height, rotational velocity, time to the rotating position, and tilt. Drazdova’s approach and expert coaching has helped make multi-rotational jumps a reality for countless skaters – and her skaters are making waves internationally.

At the 2021 Manitoba Super Skate, Canadian junior skater Callie Ogal placed 1st, outdoing her 7th-place finish in 2019, with the help of regular online off-ice classes with Drazdova. In Kazakhstan, Eva Nabozhenko went from 6th place in 2019/2020 to 3rd place in nationals in just 6 months of an additional regular off-ice practice in 2021.

“Nowadays the sport of figure skating is super-competitive, even at the amateur level,” said Drazdova in a 2022 LA Weekly article. “Quadruple jumps have become the expectation, but without proper coaching – coaching that focuses on off-ice training and safety – this goal is out of reach for most skaters.” However, Drazdova seems up to the challenge.

Arman Sargsyan: “There are no weak ones, there are those who do not want to become strong” (Petr Kvyatkovsky).

For all boxers, victory in the ring is the main goal. However, to achieve it, one must not only possess technique, drive, and passion for the sport but also have a burning desire and strong internal confidence in one’s abilities, as well as the belief that the only correct outcome of the fight is to defeat the opponent. Behind every great boxer stands a great coach, whose mastery is best demonstrated through the championship titles of their protégés.

Today our guest is a titled athlete, a former professional boxer, and now a boxing coach, Arman Sargsyan, who knows all about the ups and downs of boxing.

Arman, the traditional question: how did you get into boxing?

I liked boxing since childhood. Probably, like most boys, I watched professional fights on TV with great pleasure together with my father. At the age of 6, my mother took me to a boxing gym. And already from the first training, I was finally convinced that I wanted to engage in this particular sport.

Tell me about your first significant victories.

I achieved my first significant victory at the age of 15. At that time, I became the champion of the city of Yerevan in the 48 kg weight category. At 18, I became a silver medalist at the Armenian championship in the 51 kg weight category. After serving in the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Armenia from 2001 to 2003, I became the amateur boxing champion of the Central Federal District of the Russian Federation in the 60 kg weight category. I had 110 amateur fights, losing only 4 of them. During this time, I became a Master of Sports.

In 2003, I transitioned to professional boxing, where I continued my winning streak. Within a year, I won a match as part of the “Preparing World Champions in Russia” program. In 2006, I became the holder of two titles – the Russian Boxing Champion in the lightweight category and the Champion of the CIS and Slavic countries according to the WBC version. In 2007, I became the WBC Asian Champion, and in 2008, I became the WBL World Champion in the lightweight category. Overall, I had 14 professional fights, winning all 14, 8 of them by knockout.

You have been boxing as an amateur for several years and then transitioned to professional boxing. What motivated you to make this decision?

I wanted to be independent and achieve more than just diplomas and medals. Every boxer, and not just boxers, understands that professionals leave their mark in history.

What does an athlete need to do to enter professional boxing?

The first thing is athletic qualifications, titles, and victories in tournaments. The second is financial resources. The athlete must find the means or people who are willing to invest in them. The third is a good coach and manager. These are the main criteria.

Arman, do you think success in amateur boxing guarantees success in professional boxing?

I would say that amateur boxing is good experience and a good support. However, success in amateurs does not guarantee success in professionals.

Many athletes from post-Soviet countries move to Europe and the United States to build a professional career. Why?

Because there are more opportunities to become a good professional in the US and Europe. If a boxer is truly focused on achieving significant results, then sooner or later the question of relocation will arise.

Let’s go back to your boxing career. You had fourteen fights in the professional ring. Can you highlight one that stands out the most in your memory?

I remember every single fight of mine. Each match was interesting in its own way and different from the others. I always want to box and showcase beautiful boxing. If I had to choose one, I would say it was the fight with Ben Odamatti from Ghana. Perhaps, it was one of the most difficult and tense fights, a real slugfest. I won by points, but the Ghanaian boxer was also good.

Was there a fight that you regretted not happening?

I regret the fight that didn’t happen with the Mexican boxer Genaro Trazancos. It was supposed to be my first fight on US soil. But two days before the event, the opponent refused to fight. I don’t know why, as Genaro is an experienced boxer and at that time had almost three times more professional fights than I did.

What happened next?

I found a new opponent – Mexican boxer Leo Martinez. We had a fight in which I won by knockout in the seventh round and became the WBL lightweight world champion. I have already talked about it. In 2010, I had a non-title fight in Las Vegas, and then waited for two years for a title fight, which never happened for various reasons. So, I returned to Moscow and began my coaching career in 2013.

In 2017, I founded a boxing school where, in addition to teaching children and adults, we train competitive athletes. I was also a first-class sports referee for three years. In 2019, I moved to the United States, where I train Russian professional boxer Petros Ananyan, who competes in the super lightweight weight category. I also volunteer as a boxing coach at an elementary school in Burbank, Los Angeles.

In your opinion, is it harder to box or to teach others this craft?

Perhaps it would be wrong to compare the work of a professional boxer to the work of a coach. This is a topic that can be debated for a long time. Both professions are incredibly difficult. But as promoter Petr Kvyatkovsky said, “When they say ‘a boxer from God,’ I say ‘a boxer from a Trainer.'” And that’s true. No matter how talented a boxer is, without a good coach, he is unable to truly realize his potential. In world boxing, there are examples of great champions who were not able to become great coaches.

Arman, finish the sentence “For me, boxing is …”

Life.

Let’s delve a little deeper into what you said. It is known that many Eastern martial arts are positioned as a special philosophy and way of life. Do you think the same can be said about boxing?

More yes than no. If you think about it, every sport teaches the most important thing – discipline. However, in boxing, discipline holds a special place. In addition to toughening the character and fostering willpower, resilience, fearlessness, self-confidence, persistence, concentration – everything a boxer needs in the ring and is extremely necessary in the life of every real man, surprisingly to many, it also instills qualities such as modesty, respect, restraint, patience, and self-sacrifice. Therefore, it can be confidently stated that boxing is a great school of life. Many rashly think that boxing is muscle strength and that it teaches you how to hit. But that’s not true. Boxing is the strength of the mind, and it teaches you how to take a punch. Isn’t that philosophy?

You just said some intelligent and correct things. This doesn’t align with the opinion of the general public who believe that all boxers suffer from a lack of intelligence. What do you think about this?

I want to ask you a counter question: Is intelligence determined by a specific type of sport? Every person has a certain level of intelligence. Perhaps some people really lack it. But how can that be related to a particular sport, I don’t quite understand.

Thank you for your worthy answer. And finally, I want to ask a traditional question: What would you like to wish our readers?

I believe that every person, regardless of age, should find something they excel at, take it seriously, and never give up if something doesn’t work out. Only then can they achieve success and prosperity for themselves and their family. As Petr Kvyatkovsky said, “there are no weak people, there are those who do not want to become strong!”.

Aaron Rodgers Leaving the Green Bay Packers: What to Know

The NFL world was left stunned and Green Bay Packers fans heartbroken as it was announced that Aaron Rodgers, the long-time face of the franchise, has been traded to the New York Jets. This marks the end of an era for the Packers, as Rodgers has been with the team for 17 years, racking up numerous accolades and records during his time in Green Bay. The move is significant not only for the Packers but also for the NY Jets, who have been in search of a franchise quarterback for years.

Aaron Rodgers’ Legacy with the Green Bay Packers

Drafted in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft, Aaron Rodgers spent his first three seasons learning from the legendary Brett Favre. In 2008, he took over as the starting quarterback and began to build an impressive legacy. During his tenure with the Packers, Rodgers has been a nine-time Pro Bowler, three-time NFL MVP, and led the team to a Super Bowl victory in the 2010 season. With a career passer rating of 103.9 and over 50,000 passing yards, Rodgers is arguably one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game.

However, the relationship between Rodgers and the Packers’ front office had been strained over the last few years, with rumors swirling about his desire to leave the team. The drafting of quarterback Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft seemed to signal that the Packers were preparing for life after Rodgers, and his departure seemed inevitable.

Impact on the Green Bay Packers

Rodgers’ departure leaves a gaping hole at the quarterback position for the Packers. Although Jordan Love has been waiting in the wings, he is unproven as a starter in the NFL. The Packers will need to have a strong supporting cast around Love to ensure success in the post-Rodgers era. This trade may also impact the future of star wide receiver Davante Adams, who has been vocal about his desire to play with Rodgers. The Packers will need to address these concerns to maintain their status as contenders in the NFC.

A New Beginning with the NY Jets

The New York Jets have had a tumultuous time at the quarterback position since the departure of Joe Namath. The addition of Aaron Rodgers immediately elevates the Jets to a potential playoff contender in the AFC. With a young, talented roster and new head coach Robert Saleh, the Jets are in a prime position to build around Rodgers and make a push for a deep playoff run.

Beyond his on-field impact, Rodgers’ presence will bring invaluable experience and leadership to a young Jets team. The organization hopes that his winning mentality can help change the culture in New York and bring much-needed stability to the franchise.

Conclusion

The trade of Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers to the New York Jets marks the end of an era for one of the NFL’s most storied franchises and the beginning of an exciting new chapter for another. Packers fans will always cherish the memories and success Rodgers brought to Green Bay, while Jets fans eagerly await the possibilities that come with having a future Hall of Fame quarterback leading their team.

Only time will tell how this trade will ultimately impact both franchises, but one thing is for certain: the NFL landscape has shifted with the departure of Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers.

Flame Bearers Opens Podcast Slots and Live Events to Female Sports Organizations

Even if you don’t work directly with female athletes, there’s a very good chance you still want to support women in sports. Frankly, it’s hard not to. Providing the facilities and opportunities for women athletes to compete is one struggle, but elevating them as role models and leaders is another.

Jamie Mittelman, the founder of Flame Bearers, frequently hears about the adversity female Olympians and Paralympians face. Not just the moments of glory and fame, but what happens when the fans and cameras go away. After almost three years of hard work and multiple awards, she is multiplying the impact her platform is having on people around the world.

Mittelman started Flame Bearers in 2020 after a period of self-reflection and re-alignment with her passions and skills. Since then, she has become an influential player in women’s sports and aims for Flame Bearers to become the go-to name for stories of elite female athletes. A flagship podcast, live events, and video stand front and center of the Flame Bearers brand, one which has stood under lights as bright as the Super Bowl. The resulting opportunities for like-minded industry leaders are only just beginning.

A chance for change

Flame Bearers isn’t just a space to talk about women in sports. Yes, the athletes she works with are all elite athletes, but the conversations are about resilience, overcoming bias, and hopes for the future. For example, at a recent event, Professional Afghan Cyclyst and Nobel Peace Prize Nominee, Rukhsar Habibizai shared being forced out of Afghanistan after the Taliban took over and her fervent commitment to elevating the voices of all Afghan women. Flame Bearers is a cause and movement that if supported, can bring about real change. And it’s not just about elevating the usual suspects. Yes, they are there too and Mittelman loves working with athletes she personally grew up idolizing, but she believes it’s just as important to champion and elevate frequently overlooked women such as women with disabilities and athletes from the Global South. And they go side by side on the same platform, receiving the same level of coverage.

“Our athletes are amazing speakers who can inspire the world,” Mittelman proclaims. “We all love to connect with Olympians and Paralympians—their stories resonate with everyone. Unfortunately, people often miss out on athletes with disabilities and women from underrepresented countries. We are changing that”

While many businesses are looking to make statements and investments in diversity and inclusion, Flame Bearers provides an easy way forward. Internally, employees can find motivation in a CEO’s commitment to equity, while the impact on global conversations can snowball. It all starts with a story.

Athletes on the airwaves

It’s common to name-drop podcasts as an easy solution to complex problems. Have you learned about X? No, so check out Y podcast to learn about it. While there are countless issues that touch and impact women’s sports, Mittelman doesn’t propose her work as the silver bullet.. Rather, she sees storytelling and Flame Bearers as a way to get people to care and connect with the athletes. As a former MBA student at Dartmouth, she’s fueling the demand; she believes people become fans and supporters when they personally connect with others or causes. “Most people aren’t going to start watching or caring about women’s sports because someone tells them to. We live in a world where everyone is clamoring for attention. Click here, watch this, donate here. If I told you to go support the rainforest or cancer research or any other very important cause, would you? The key is getting people to connect personally and adding value to their lives. Then they care and then they show up.”

Company executives can also become a part of this story, as Flame Bearers makes space for sponsorship in its groundbreaking episodes.

The opportunities are seemingly endless. Businesses with a commitment to diversity likely already have a team member dedicated to the subject. The Flame Bearers Podcast could be an ideal place for them to speak about the issue, an athlete that inspires them, or lend support to the cause. Flame Bearers’ mission is constant, so Mittelman and her team will always have guests from women’s sports at the starting line ready to go.

Sportswomen on stage

While podcasts can reach a boundless audience and change conversations overnight, it’s difficult to beat an in-person experience. The messages and stories that Flame Bearers’ athletes communicate hit hard, whether in earphones or via an office microphone.

For live events, the opportunities for potential sponsors are flexible down to the last detail. Support is all the organization asks; once guaranteed, companies can communicate their vision, and the Flame Bearers team will do their best to make it happen. Their connections to Olympians and Paralympians became evident from three seasons of their podcast and their event-planning skills proven at countless events including panels at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Women’s Conference.

Far too many companies claim on job descriptions and website blurbs that they are committed to diversity with nothing to back it up. Without experiencing a company’s culture, it’s often impossible to find out if there is any substance behind that claim. A collaboration or sponsorship with Flame Bearers could be a valuable opportunity for companies to walk the walk on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Find out more here about how to support Olympians and Paralympians.

“Isaiah Birdsong & Jenzel Nash” The Inspiring Chronicle of Relentless Commitment and Chasing Hoop Dreams

Image commercially licensed from Unsplash

Jenzel Nash, a former University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Miners basketball phenom, made her mark as a high school prodigy before becoming a key player in collegiate basketball. Nash was named to the 2011 Parade Magazine All-American team after racking up an impressive 37.7 points per game for Worthing High School in 2010-11. Her remarkable talent didn’t go unnoticed, as she was also awarded VYPE Magazine’s Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year.

Nash’s college career was highlighted by her recognition as the C-USA Sixth Player of the Year in 2013-14. She contributed an average of 11.5 points per game as a Miner, making her the team’s second-highest scorer. As an All-C-USA first-team honoree in the 2015-16 season, she continued to lead the team in various categories, including points per game (13.8) and offensive rebounds (84).

Fast forward to November 2020, Jenzel Nash and Alexis Thornton opened Different Breed Performance Training, a basketball training facility, and a sports performance center. Initially starting with just six athletes, the facility rapidly expanded to accommodate over forty within a few short months. However, each class is capped at eight participants to ensure personalized attention and skill development. According to Nash, “The goal is to prepare today’s youth for success in high school and college.”

One of Nash’s standout pupils is Isaiah Birdsong, a rising AAU basketball player currently playing for the El Paso, Texas, Nike ProSkills Elite team. Having played basketball since the age of eight, Birdsong’s ultimate goal is to play basketball at the collegiate level. His work with Coach Nash has been transformative, as he explains, “Coach Nash challenges me, and I learn something new every time I step in the gym.”Birdsong credits Nash for refining his skills and inspiring him to push the boundaries of his potential.

The bond between Nash and Birdsong transcends the typical coach-athlete relationship, with Nash wholeheartedly believing in Birdsong’s potential to succeed. Birdsong has found the perfect mentor in Nash. She notes, “This kid can shoot the lights out, and his work ethic is unmatched.” Inspired by his favorite player, NBA star Stephen Curry, Birdsong aspires to emulate his sharpshooting and playing style. As a smaller player, Birdsong focuses on mastering the skills of a perimeter shooter, getting separation from defenders, and ball handling with Coach Nash’s expert guidance.

Ultimately, the story of Jenzel Nash and Isaiah Birdsong is a testament to the power of determination and pursuing excellence. Nash’s dedication to fostering the next generation of basketball talent has created a lasting impact, while Birdsong exemplifies the determination and hard work that fuels every athlete’s dreams. The incredible bond between a coach and her protégé demonstrates the impact of mentorship and the transformative power of passion, hard work, and self-belief on the road to success. Together, they embody the resilience and spirit required to aim for the stars and relentlessly chase their ambitions.

Anthony Harris Shows Out At Fellow NFL Player’s Wedding

NFL players are known for their competitive spirit and drive to win, but they also know the importance of supporting their fellow teammates both on and off the field. Recently, Minnesota Vikings safety Anthony Harris and his fiancée Paige Bieker did just that when they attended the wedding of Harris’ teammate, TJ Edwards, in Cabo.

The wedding was an exclusive affair, Paige Bieker was given permission to share behind-the-scenes footage of the event on the Women of the NFL Instagram page. They captured the stunning scenery and events leading up to the wedding, including poolside lounging, water volleyball, and water aerobics.

But before we dive into the details, let’s talk about TJ Edwards. Edwards is a starting middle linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles and had a standout season, ending with 99 solo tackles, tying him for seventh most in the entire league. This was a make-or-break year for Edwards in Philadelphia, and he delivered. The organization signed him to a one-year contract, and with his impressive performance, it’s near impossible to see him suiting up for any other team. Some experts are even projecting him to receive a massive deal from the Eagles or another team that can meet his price.

For Edwards, his wedding in Cabo was a perfect way to cap off a life-changing season. And for Harris and Bieker, it was an opportunity to show their support for their teammate and capture some unforgettable memories. Dozens of fans also wondered when Harris and his fiancée Bieker would tie the knot as discussions of Edwards’ wedding sparked hundreds of tweets on Twitter.

Harris is known for being a phenomenal teammate and a kindhearted individual, and his attendance at Edwards’ wedding is just one example of that. He and Bieker made sure to capture the beautiful moments leading up to the big event, and their Instagram takeover showcased the stunning views and fun activities that they enjoyed in Cabo.

The NFL is a high-stakes, high-pressure world, but moments like these show that players are more than just athletes. They are also friends, supporters, and family members who know the importance of being there for one another, even in the offseason. Harris and Bieker’s attendance at Edwards’ wedding highlights the camaraderie and brotherhood that exists between players in the league. It also serves as a reminder that even in a competitive world, showing kindness and support to one another is always the right thing to do. Moments like these should be celebrated, and it’s refreshing to see players like Harris and Edwards setting an excellent example both on and off the field.

In the end, it’s clear that Harris and Bieker had a fantastic time at Edwards’ wedding, and their support for their teammate was unwavering. This is just another example of the strong bonds that are formed between NFL players and how people should take inspiration from such down-to-earth athletes, and it’s a reminder that there’s more to the game than just what happens on the field.

Chicago Bulls vs. Utah Jazz: Preview & Predictions For The Nov. 28 Showdown at Vivint Arena

Inconsistent Bulls Trying To Regain 2021-22 Form With Tough Schedule Ahead

The Chicago Bulls and Utah Jazz will square off at Vivint Arena next week for the first of two 2022-23 regular season meetings.

This matchup is sure to bring back some fun memories for the nostalgic crowd. Michael Jordan’s dynastic Bulls defeated the Karl Malone and John Stockton-led Jazz in the 1997 and 1998 NBA Finals to complete a second three-peat in the ‘90s decade.

Neither organization has reached the NBA Finals since Jordan hit the iconic game-winner over Bryon Russell in the waning seconds of Game 6 to clinch Chicago’s sixth championship. That turned out to be the final shot of Jordan’s career with the Bulls, as he entered retirement for a second time before returning in the 2001-02 campaign— his first of two seasons with the Washington Wizards.

Chicago was one of the biggest surprises of 2021-22, finishing with 46 wins to finish as the No. 6 seed in the East. But they’ve struggled with consistency through the first month of the season, as a four-game losing streak (Nov. 9 to Nov. 18) dropped them to four games below .500.

The Bulls reminded the league how dangerous they can be, however, by defeating the NBA’s top team in the Boston Celtics 121-107 on Nov. 21. That was Chicago’s second win of the young season against the defending Eastern Conference Champions, so we know they can hang with the top clubs.

Time will tell if they’re able to build off that convincing win and move up the standings.

Jazz Continue To Surprise The League

After another early playoff exit, the Jazz decided to rebuild by dealing away franchise superstars Rudy Gobert (traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves) and Donovan Mitchell (sent to the Cleveland Cavaliers).

Quin Snyder, one of the most successful coaches in franchise history, left the organization following eight years on the job. The Jazz were widely expected to be prime contenders for the top selection in the 2023 draft, but instead, they’ve been the NBA’s top surprise team up to this point.

34-year-old head coach Will Hardy has maximized the talents of veteran forward Lauri Markkanen and guards Jordan Clarkson, Malik Beasley and Collin Sexton.

A stingy defense, led by a three-time Defensive Player of the Year award winner in Gobert, was Utah’s identity under Snyder. But thus far in 2022-23, a prolific offense with sufficient scoring depth has powered Utah to its hot start.

Is it sustainable? Probably not. And top Western Conference heavyweights like the Golden State Warriors, Memphis Grizzlies, Denver Nuggets and Dallas Mavericks haven’t fully hit their stride yet.

But the fact the Jazz are already among the top teams in the West, after trading away its two franchise cornerstone players, is nothing short of incredible. Gobert, Mitchell and Snyder may be gone, but the winning foundation that those three installed in Salt Lake City hasn’t gone away.

Simply making the postseason would make for a successful year in Utah.

Prediction: Jazz Will Beat Bulls 110-102

While offense has been Utah’s strength this year, the Bulls have been carried by a borderline top-10 defense.

Veteran stalwarts DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine are still driving the offense, but Chicago’s scoring depth doesn’t match up with that of the Jazz. And depth is often the difference in a showdown between two practically evenly matched teams.

And while the Bulls have been one of the worst road teams in the early stages of 2022-23, Vivint Arena has once again proven to be a major disadvantage for visitors. Utah has been a far better team at home, so there’s another reason to believe they’ll ultimately emerge victorious here.

DeRozan and LaVine will do their parts in keeping this game close, but Utah’s superior offense will be too much for Chicago to overcome. The Jazz will pull away with a 110-102 victory on home court to keep the momentum going.
