The leaves are beginning to turn, and there is crispness in the air. Summer is coming to an end. However, that does not mean it is time to abandon your patio and retreat into your home. Here are eight ideas for transitioning your patio space for cooler weather.
1. A Fire Pit
A fire pit has a couple of functions. First, it adds warmth to the patio. It also adds a sense of ambiance. Imagine sitting around a fire pit on a chilly evening, enjoying toasted marshmallows and hot chocolate.
2. Winter Hardy Plants
There are plenty of winter plants that can help to set the atmosphere. Plants such as conifers, holly, and boxwood will bring a splash of color to your patio. They will thrive through the cold winter months.
3. Blankets
Blankets are a must for cold-weather patios. Consider blankets made from fleece or other materials that do not absorb moisture. Store them in a tub or basket nearby where guests can easily access them when they are cold.
4. Lighting
Daylight fades quickly during the colder months. Find ways to incorporate fairy lights into your patio decor. Wrap them around outdoor patio plants or place them in trees near your patio. Larger LED lights will help to light up specific areas. Lanterns can be a great addition, too. Consider putting them on tabletops or near a walkway to light up the path. Lanterns made from plastic or metal will hold up to the winter weather while adding to the ambiance of a chilly night. Go a step further and purchase solar lanterns that will soak up the sun.
5. Heaters
Fire pits are a fun addition to a patio, and while they give off some heat, patio heaters are a better option for keeping the patio cozy. Heaters will provide a steady stream of heat, ensuring everyone will be warm and comfortable while enjoying the outdoors.
6. Add Some Curtains
Curtains can add a sense of aesthetics to the patio. Choose curtains that match the furniture or neutral colors that blend into the background. The curtains should be waterproof and heavy enough to withstand the winter winds. Curtains can be closed to keep out the cold and wet while keeping everyone comfortable on the other side.
7. Did Someone Say Hot Tub?
Yes, hot tubs can be enjoyable all year. However, there is something about sitting outside on a chilly night and watching the stars. Though a traditional hot tub may be out of most people’s budget, there is an option. A blow-up hot tub is a perfect alternative. They come in several sizes to accommodate everyone’s needs.
8. Outdoor Cooking
Grilling or outdoor cooking is not only for the summer months. Nothing is better than a bowl of chili or a nice steak dinner on a chilly fall night. To keep your grilling equipment working throughout the colder months, cover grills and other equipment with appropriate covers to keep rain and snow from causing damage.
Just because the weather is turning colder does not mean outdoor fun does not have to stop. Turning the patio into a cozy place to go, even when the weather turns, will only create lasting memories.
