Apple has officially launched the MacBook Neo, a new laptop priced at $599 that aims to take over the mid-range computer market. This is Apple’s most affordable laptop ever, and it is specifically designed to compete with popular Chromebooks and Windows PCs. By offering a high-quality Mac experience for a much lower price, Apple is trying to reach students, families, and first-time buyers who previously found MacBooks too expensive.

A Colorful Entry into the Budget Market

The MacBook Neo is not just a cheaper version of an old model. It is a brand-new design that comes in four bright colors: blush, indigo, silver, and citrus. The laptop features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with a resolution of 2408-by-1506 pixels. This screen is brighter and sharper than almost any other laptop in the $600 price range, making it ideal for watching movies or working on school projects.

“We are incredibly excited to introduce MacBook Neo, which delivers the magic of the Mac at a breakthrough price,” said John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. “Built from the ground up to be more affordable for even more people, MacBook Neo is a laptop only Apple could create.”

One of the most interesting parts of the design is the build quality. While many budget laptops are made of plastic, the Neo uses a solid aluminum frame. It weighs only 2.7 pounds (1.23 kg), which is light enough for a student to carry in a backpack all day without feeling tired.

Power from an Unexpected Source

The secret to the MacBook Neo’s low price and high performance is its processor. For the first time, Apple is using an iPhone chip to power a laptop. The Neo runs on the A18 Pro chip, the same silicon found in the iPhone 16 Pro. Even though it is a “phone chip,” it is very powerful when placed inside a computer.

Apple claims the A18 Pro makes the Neo up to 50 percent faster for daily tasks like browsing the web than a bestselling Windows PC with an Intel Core Ultra 5 processor. For tasks involving artificial intelligence, like summarizing notes or editing photos, it can be up to three times faster. Because the chip is so efficient, the laptop does not need a fan to stay cool. This means it runs completely silently, even when you are working on something difficult.

A Strategic Move Against Chromebooks

For years, Google’s Chromebooks have dominated schools and libraries because they are cheap and easy to use. Apple has slowly been losing ground in the education sector, but the MacBook Neo is designed to win that market back. By offering the laptop for just $499 to schools and students, Apple is making a direct challenge to Google and Microsoft.

Technology market analyst Jacob Bourne from Emarketer noted that Apple is making a smart choice during a time when many people are struggling with high prices. “Apple is aware consumers are facing inflationary pressures,” Bourne said. He believes the company is playing a “long game” by using affordable hardware as a gateway to its ecosystem. Once a student starts using a Mac, they are more likely to buy an iPhone, an iPad, or a subscription to iCloud in the future.

What the Experts Are Saying

The response from Wall Street and tech experts has been very positive. Many analysts believe the Neo will help Apple grow its share of the computer market significantly. As of early 2026, Apple holds about 16% of the desktop and laptop market, while Windows holds over 70%.

“We believe MacBook Neo positions Apple to significantly ramp market share, given higher volumes typically associated with the lower price segment of the market,” explained J.P. Morgan analyst Samik Chatterjee.

However, moving into the budget market is not without risks. Some worry that if too many people buy the $599 Neo instead of the $1,099 MacBook Air, Apple’s profits might go down. But most experts agree that the Neo is different enough from the Air to avoid this problem. For example, the Neo lacks a backlit keyboard and has fewer ports than its more expensive siblings.

Analyst Benedict Evans pointed out how unique this move is for the company. “Nothing illustrates the way Apple treads its own path better than the fact that as everybody in tech talks about AI, it just launched a takeover of a market that has been around for 20 or 30 years,” Evans wrote on social media.

Looking Toward the Future

The MacBook Neo officially became available on March 11, 2026. Early data suggests it is already a hit. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects Apple to ship between 4 and 5 million units of the Neo this year alone. If these numbers are correct, the Neo could become one of the most successful laptops in Apple’s history.

By focusing on “good enough” computing with a premium feel, Apple is showing that it can compete at any price point. The Neo runs the full version of macOS Tahoe, meaning users get the same software and security features as people who spend $3,000 on a MacBook Pro.

For students and budget-conscious buyers, the choice is now much simpler. They no longer have to settle for a plastic Windows laptop or a limited Chromebook if they want to stay within a $600 budget. They can finally own a Mac.
