Tailgating is an American tradition often associated with the sport of football, but it’s something you can do with other sports and events. It’s not even something you have to do in a stadium or venue parking lot, either, as you can host killer tailgate parties at home. If you’re inclined to host a tailgate party but aren’t sure where to begin, consider the following ideas.

Have Food Ready

Other than a truck to tailgate from, the most essential element of this kind of party is having food available. Think of the things you can do using a portable grill and paper plates. Tailgate foods include barbecue ribs, chicken wings, hamburgers, and hot dogs for the main course, accompanied by potato salad, mac and cheese, cookies, and chips and dip.

Mount a Big Screen

You should have plenty of games and activities available, but you should also have a big screen mounted. An at-home tailgate party needs a place where people can watch the big game.

However, your family and friends might want to watch other games or pregame analyses and highlights, even in a parking lot. A retractable screen and a small projector can be enough to accomplish this.

Let the Games Begin

Pre-game entertainment is crucial to tailgating. Tossing around a pigskin is great if you have room to do it safely. Other options include cornhole, ladder toss, Jenga, checkers, and Yahtzee.

Practice End Zone Dancing

Modern technology means that small and portable speakers pack quite an acoustic punch. Crank up your favorite game-day anthems from every generation, and clear out a space where fans can show off their touchdown celebrations or bust some moves.

Get the Right Furniture

Rocking camp chairs are great for anyone who needs a break or wants to relax in something sturdy but portable. Anything with a cup holder is perfect for tailgating. A folding table lets you lay out your spread or play games. Protect it with a tablecloth for easy cleaning.

Find the Right Attire

Show team or franchise pride by sporting the colors and jerseys that go with them. If you’re willing to go that far, have someone do face painting for anyone.

Enjoy a Photo Booth

Get a plain white sheet to hang from your truck before decking it out with streamers, banners, and pennants for your team. Let everyone take selfies in front of it on game day for social media credibility.

Have Some Cigars Handy

Sharing cigars with friends after a victory is a great tradition, but you don’t have to wait for the win. Sometimes, tailgating is just about relaxing before the big game. You’re already outside, so why not share a stogie with those around you or take a few moments to yourself?

Always Remember the Fundamentals

Your tailgate party must start well before the game if you’re tailgating at the stadium. Afternoon parties can work for evening games, but you should begin the fun and entertainment in the morning for the more common afternoon kickoff times. Getting started early also works well for backyard parties at home if you want everyone to arrive in time for the pregame festivities. As always, have plenty of food, beer, and activities available.
