We’ve got Georgia on our mind, specifically, finding a waterfront home in the great state of Georgia. Georgia’s waterfront properties can be found along its expansive coastline, which includes areas like Savannah, St. Simons Island, Sea Island, Jekyll Island, and Cumberland Island. Inland also has properties along rivers such as the Savannah River and Altamaha River and lakes like Lake Lanier and Lake Oconee.

Tomo, a real estate and mortgage website, wanted to help narrow down the list of available waterfront homes for sale, curating a short list of homes throughout Georgia. After perusing the list, there are some tips to help buyers with their waterfront home search.

Check out these towns where waterfront properties are on the market right now:

  • Alpharetta, GA: One must think slightly outside the box if buying a waterfront home in Alpharetta. The city is situated further inland and does not have direct access to large bodies of water like oceans, major lakes, or rivers with extensive waterfront properties. However, a few neighborhoods and communities in Alpharetta feature homes with private ponds, small lakes, or creeks running through the properties. These water features can offer scenic views and opportunities for outdoor activities like fishing or kayaking. Some upscale developments and luxury estates in Alpharetta may also have landscaped ponds or small water bodies as part of their amenities.
  • Athens, GA: Opportunities for waterfront living near Athens are primarily located along rivers and smaller lakes in the surrounding area. Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair are popular nearby lakes where waterfront homes can be found. They offer scenic views and recreational opportunities such as boating, fishing, and waterfront living.
  • Atlanta, GA: Atlanta, known for its dynamic urban environment and bustling city life, offers some opportunities for waterfront living, albeit in a different context than traditional beachfront or lakefront homes. For example, the Chattahoochee River runs through the northern part of Atlanta and offers some waterfront properties along its banks. Areas like Vinings and Sandy Springs have homes with views of the river and access to parks and trails along its shores.
  • Macon, GA: While Macon may not have as many waterfront options as larger lakes or coastal cities, some lakes and rivers offer the waterfront lifestyle. Lake Tobesofkee, located just west of Macon, is a reservoir on Tobesofkee Creek, offering waterfront properties, including lakefront homes and cabins. The lake is popular for boating, fishing, and recreational activities. The Ocmulgee River flows through Macon, and some properties along its banks offer waterfront views and access. These homes often provide a peaceful setting with opportunities for outdoor activities such as kayaking, canoeing, and fishing.
  • Roswell, GA: Roswell delivers many diverse options for waterfront living, whether you’re looking for riverfront homes along the Chattahoochee, lakefront properties with access to recreational lakes, or homes with scenic pond views. Working with a local real estate agent familiar with Roswell can help buyers explore available waterfront properties that match their preferences and lifestyles.
  • Savannah, GA: Savannah is known for its historic charm and Southern hospitality. There are several opportunities for waterfront living along its rivers, marshes, and nearby coastal areas. The Historic District of Savannah along the Savannah River offers some historic homes and condominiums with river views. These properties blend historic architecture and scenic waterfront views, often within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions. Wilmington Island and Whitemarsh Island are two islands near Savannah that offer waterfront properties along the Wilmington River and Turner Creek. Homes here often feature private docks, boat lifts, and expansive views of the marshes and waterways. Residents enjoy boating, fishing, and the natural beauty of coastal Georgia. If interested in island living, there is Skidaway Island, located south of Savannah, is home to The Landings, a gated community with waterfront properties along the Skidaway River and nearby tidal creeks. The community offers amenities like golf courses, marinas, and walking trails along the marshes and waterways.

When a buyer thinks of waterfront homes, cities in Georgia may not be the first that comes to mind. However, there are many options for owning a waterfront home on many of the lakes and rivers in these towns and other towns in Georgia.
