Thanks to digitalization and new technologies, we have long become photographers, amassing dozens of collages and videos on our smartphones daily. However, the true art of photography isn’t just about capturing and preserving a moment. It’s the ability to evoke emotions with a glance at a picture, transporting you back in time to relive that experience.
The protagonist of today’s story is Oleksandr Radomskyi, a young Ukrainian photographer. His unique approach to storytelling through photography has been known in Europe for quite some time. Before moving to New York in 2022, he was a highly sought-after professional in Ukraine, frequently invited to capture fashion shows, sports events, festivals, theater performances, and private gatherings.
In the U.S., Oleksandr Radomskyi’s talent was quickly recognized. And it’s no surprise—his creativity and keen understanding of human psychology turn each of his photos into a narrative. His unique framing techniques and mastery of backlighting, which he developed based on years of experience, have revolutionized conceptual photography over the last decade.
The secret behind Oleksandr Radomskyi’s success
- “Movement in photography is primarily about working with space and light. Before each shoot, I analyze the environment to understand how it will impact the frame. I focus on finding angles that capture motion while maintaining a harmonious composition. However, since time is usually limited, I often rely on spontaneity during the shoot,” explains Radomskyi.
According to the photographer, light plays a crucial role in dynamic shots. “In open spaces, natural lighting creates vibrant, saturated images. But I adapt using flash or higher ISO settings when the light is insufficient. Yet, artificial lighting can sometimes create harsh shadows, so I’ve developed techniques that add dramatic flair to the scene,” he says.
Emotional Connection with Subjects is Key
People are the main characters in narrative photography, and the photographer’s interaction with each subject determines the dynamic and success of the session.
“Interaction doesn’t have to be direct. At large events, photographers often go unnoticed. Still, they must anticipate every moment when the subjects are fully immersed in the action and emotions. I’m talking about moments of joy, tension, or concentration—anything that brings the image to life,” Radomskyi explains.
Where To Learn Oleksandr Radomskyi’s Techniques
Friendly and open, Oleksandr Radomskyi is eager to share his professional knowledge with fellow photographers and newcomers who want to master his method of storytelling photography. To make his craft accessible to more people, he launched an online school where he teaches the secrets of his craft and how to quickly typify subjects.
Radomskyi is also the author of The Art of Movement: A Guide to Storytelling Photography. In this book, he shares his journey as a photographer, his initial mistakes, and how he eventually discovered his unique style.
Besides personal stories, the book explains his techniques with practical recommendations that professional photographers can apply immediately. Radomskyi’s book and online course provide a comprehensive educational foundation for beginners looking to specialize in storytelling photography. Yet, the photographer has no intention of stopping there.
“I’m obsessively meticulous. I keep working until I achieve perfection. I’m constantly experimenting and always looking for something new to bring my creative ideas to life. So I can confidently say that I will continue to surprise both my fans and students,” promises Radomskyi. We’ll certainly be watching this young Ukrainian photographer from New York and look forward to sharing his next creative breakthroughs. Stay tuned!
