Getting ready for a trip in the RV is enthralling. Instead of having to pay for costly hotels, you can still see all of the sights while having a comfortable place to sleep at night. Before hitting the road, though, make some preparations to ensure the RV is ready for travel.

1. Get the Vehicle Inspected

While you can take care of some preparations independently, you should leave the full RV inspection to a trusted mechanic. Getting the RV thoroughly checked out ensures that you can have a safe and worry-free vacation. Follow any recommendations from your mechanic regarding necessary repairs and maintenance.

2. Check the Tires

The mechanic should examine the tires during the inspection, and you should do a final check too before getting on the road. A tire blowout in a rural, desolate area, especially if you’re planning to drive through the night, could be seriously stressful and even dangerous.

3. Check the Oil

Having to stop for an oil change may not be a big deal when you’re close to home, but this situation can turn into an emergency if you’re far from any gas station or mechanic shop. If you have any concerns about running out of oil on the trip, talk to your mechanic before embarking on the journey.

4. Make Sure the Wipers are Working

Even if the forecast is bright and sunny, the weather can change with little to no notice. Check to ensure that the blades aren’t in need of replacement and that the RV has plenty of wiper fluid.

5. Monitor the Air Conditioner and Heater

In the weeks leading up to the trip, make sure that the air conditioner or heater is fully working. Depending upon the season, this accessory could be vital to your comfort and safety on the trip. If anything seems even just a little off with one of these systems, schedule a maintenance appointment.

6. Fill the Tank

Make sure that the tank is completely filled with gas. You should fill up the night before you leave so that you don’t have to worry about making an additional stop in the morning. Map out locations where you will stop for gas. It’s important to know where you can stop on the route to get the appropriate gas for your vehicle. Conduct research on repair shops or services along the way too.

7. Clean the RV

Making sure that the RV is in sound working condition should be the priority. However, you should also give the vehicle a good cleaning prior to the trip. No one wants to deal with unnecessary grime, messes, or mold on vacation.

8. Do a Test Drive

If you’re new to the wonderful world of RVs or you’ve recently purchased a new vehicle, make sure to do at least a couple of test drives before getting on the road. Doing so is important for understanding how the RV handles. Anyone else who’s going to take a turn at the wheel should practice driving the RV too.

Whether you’re heading out on your first trip in the RV or you’re an experienced pro, review some tips for having a safe and enjoyable vacation.
