Chances are you’ve heard the term “work-life balance.” In today’s uncertain world, it’s hard not to continuously push yourself, especially at work. However, constantly going at 100 can be a recipe for disaster, leading to burnout quicker than you might imagine. As challenging as it might be to find work-life balance, let’s talk about a few of the ways you can do that even with a packed schedule.
Establish Clear Boundaries
You’re not alone if you have trouble establishing clear boundaries, including setting them but not really enforcing them. Many are facing the same issue as you.
It’s important to set definitive boundaries. For example, if you’re at work, try to avoid personal calls and messages during that time unless you’re on break, and try as much as possible to leave personal time only for non-work-related activities. It’s often easy for the lines to blur, but that’s where commitment to work-life balance and setting boundaries come in.
Additionally, you may also want to box off your personal time. Let’s say you’re at the gym, going for a run, spending time with your partner, hanging out with your kids, or any other activity. Consider putting your phone aside and being present, focusing solely on the activity you’re doing at that moment so you either give your undivided attention to yourself or the other person in your company.
Practice Daily Mindfulness
Meditation can be an invaluable skill, but it’s not something you’ll master overnight. However, it doesn’t have to be perfect. Starting is often a major accomplishment in itself. If you’re unsure where to begin, there are many apps and online videos that can help you with the process. The premier part is that you can do it anywhere whenever you need to.
Prioritize Self Care
It can be challenging to find time to do any type of self-care, especially when you’re so busy taking care of everything and everyone else. However, little things can add up to big results. For instance, go to an exercise class, go for a walk, have an at-home spa day, sit at home curled up with a good book, or do one of the many other things that make you happy. Speaking with a mental health professional can also be an excellent way to honor your well-being.
Consider scheduling the time in your calendar the same way you would for work, appointments, or meet-ups with loved ones to ensure you stick to your self-care “appointment.” The tough part is making sure you keep your own plans and not let anyone else interfere with them either. Just remember that you deserve your own love, time, and respect just like you generously give to everyone else.
The premier thing you can do when you’re trying to find more work-life balance is not to dive in all at once as it may feel overwhelming. Make a plan and take things one step at a time, such as scheduling time with yourself at least once a week and refusing to answer work-related messages or calls once you leave your job. Once you realize how much you enjoy having more of a work-life balance, chances are you’ll love how much better you feel.
