Today we spoke with Nick DiLisi, a hockey consultant, and his client, talented hockey player Bogdan Martynov, who recently joined the WBS Junior Knights team. We discussed the importance of consultants in a sports career, shared their first impressions of the new club, and talked about how to achieve success on the ice.

Nick, what role does a consultant play in the career of a young athlete, and how important is it to have professional representation?

Today, more than ever, young athletes are seeking representation early in their careers. In the NCAA, players are prohibited from having an agent, but they can work with a family consultant/advisor. My job is to help players and their families navigate the potential career paths, supporting them not only in sports matters but in all aspects of life that could impact their careers. It’s not just about choosing a club but also assisting with things like college applications, campus visits, and other important decisions. Young athletes often need someone they can turn to for advice on both hockey and life in general.

Bogdan, why do you think it is important to have a professional hockey consultant, and how has Nick helped you in your career?

Having a professional consultant is crucial. Nick DiLisi played a key role in my transition to the WBS Junior Knights. He helped me choose a club that best fits my goals and development. His support continues even after the move: if I face any challenges or have questions, I can always turn to him, and he finds a solution. Thanks to his help, I was able to adapt quickly to my new team, which is essential for achieving success on the ice. The consultant helps me focus on the game and my development, rather than on organizational issues.

Bogdan, what are your first impressions of the WBS Junior Knights club and its atmosphere?

I’m very happy with my new club. WBS Junior Knights is an excellent place for development as a player. It has everything you need: a comfortable campus, a professional ice arena, gyms, and highly qualified coaches. I like that the whole team is focused on a healthy lifestyle and proper nutrition, and everyone is committed to achieving the best results. We’re all on the same page, and that helps you quickly integrate into the team.

Nick, how do you select new talents for your agency? What criteria are important to you?

I am scouting and recruiting players all over the world. The game is global now, and great hockey players can be found in many different countries. For me, it’s important that players LOVE the game and want to be hockey players and not just say they want to be one. I want kids who’re coachable, great kids, and are ready to work. Each player develops differently, and I always take into account age and potential. For example, players who stand out at 14 may not always be the best at 15 or 16, so it’s important to project how they might grow. Additionally, I look for hockey IQ, skating, skill, and what might they be able to provide a team, which role can/do they play, etc.

Bogdan, how do you assess the level of interaction with the new coaches and teammates?

We have excellent communication with both the coaches and players. The coaches are very attentive and always ready to help improve my skills. I like that the training sessions here are very diverse, with a lot of time spent on the ice and in the gym. The team is focused on results, and every player is committed to collective success. I feel like we can achieve great things here.

Bogdan, what goals do you set for yourself this season in your new club?

My main goal is to win and contribute to the team’s success. I’m ready to do everything I can, whether it’s improving my skills or meeting the challenges set by the coaches. For me, it’s essential to keep developing and growing as a player, and I believe that with a club like WBS Junior Knights, we have every chance of winning.

How does an athlete deal with challenges when transitioning to a new team?

Nick DiLisi: As a consultant, I’m always there to help the player adapt to new conditions. My job is to be in touch, to solve any issues, and to eliminate any difficulties, whether they are organizational or personal. I do everything I can to make sure the athlete feels supported and can focus on their game, knowing they have professional backing.

Bogdan Martynov: I’m grateful to Nick for always being there and helping me handle any challenges. He not only organized my move to the WBS Junior Knights but also continues to support me throughout the adaptation process. This gives me confidence and allows me to fully concentrate on training and achieving my goals.

Summary

The role of a professional hockey consultant is important not only in choosing the right club but also in providing full support for the player at every stage of their career. Bogdan Martynov and Nick DiLisi are a great example of how collaboration can help young athletes develop and reach new heights in hockey.
