Sitting in the elegantly furnished lobby of a well-known hotel in downtown Atlanta, I find myself face-to-face with one of the influential figures in the world of fashion and design, Dr. Courtney A. Hammonds. Known for his impeccable style, sharp business acumen, and a deep passion for nurturing young talent, Dr. Hammonds exudes a blend of sophistication and warmth that immediately puts you at ease. Today, we’re here to discuss his latest venture, Fashion in the Garden, an event that promises to be as grand as it is innovative.
As we settle into our seats, with the hum of the city just beyond the glass doors, I’m eager to delve into the mind of a man who has consistently redefined the boundaries of fashion.
Q: Dr. Hammonds, Fashion in the Garden sounds like an incredible event. What inspired you to host a fashion show in such a unique setting?
A: Fashion and nature have always shared a symbiotic relationship. There’s something profoundly beautiful about bringing the artistry of fashion into a natural setting, where the designs can be showcased against the backdrop of something as timeless as a garden. Fashion in the Garden was inspired by the idea of harmony—how nature and fashion can coexist to create something truly extraordinary. We wanted to step away from the traditional runway and offer something more immersive, where attendees could experience fashion in a way that engages all the senses.
Q: You’re known for your work on high-profile events like the Neiman Marcus Black Designer Showcase and the Intercontinental Buckhead Fashion Show. How does Fashion in the Garden differ from your previous projects?
A: This event is a celebration of Georgia’s local designers and creatives, particularly those who may not have had the same platform as more established names. While the previous shows I’ve hosted focused on luxury and established brands, Fashion in the Garden is more about discovery and community. It’s about elevating voices that deserve to be heard and seen, and giving them a stage that’s as unique as they are. The garden setting, the live music, the intimate atmosphere—it all contributes to an experience that’s more personal and connected.
Q: You’re co-hosting this event with Dr. Dionne Boyd. What’s it like working with her, and how do your styles complement each other?
A: Dr. Boyd and I have a natural synergy. We both bring different strengths to the table—she has an incredible eye for detail and an unmatched ability to connect with people on a personal level, while I tend to focus more on the overarching vision and ensuring that everything aligns with the theme and purpose of the event. Together, we create a balance that allows us to deliver events that are both meticulously planned and dynamically executed.
Q: The lineup of designers and performers is impressive. How were they selected, and what can attendees expect from them?
A: We were very deliberate in our selection process. We wanted to feature a diverse group of designers and performers who each bring something unique to the table. The designers, like Cedric Brown and Vernell Washington, are known for their creativity and boldness. The performers, including Vince Roseborough and Maria Raquel Thomas, add another layer of energy to the event. Attendees can expect a night of innovation and inspiration, where every piece and every note is a reflection of the incredible talent within our community.
Q: You’ve been a mentor to many in the fashion industry. What advice would you give to aspiring designers and fashion professionals who want to make their mark?
A: Stay true to your vision, but be flexible in your approach. The fashion industry is ever-changing, and success often comes from your ability to adapt while staying grounded in what makes you unique. Surround yourself with people who inspire you, who challenge you, and who support your growth. And, importantly, never stop learning—there’s always something new to discover.
Q: How do you see the fashion industry evolving over the next few years, particularly in Atlanta?
A: Atlanta is on the cusp of something big. We’re seeing a shift towards more sustainable and ethical fashion practices, and there’s a growing demand for diversity and inclusivity in the industry. I believe Atlanta will play a crucial role in this evolution. We have a rich culture, a deep pool of talent, and a community that’s increasingly supportive of local and emerging designers. The future of fashion in Atlanta is bright, and I’m excited to be a part of that journey.
Q: What’s one thing you want people to take away from Fashion in the Garden?
A: I want people to walk away feeling inspired—not just by the fashion, but by the entire experience. I hope they see the potential that exists when we come together to celebrate creativity and community. Fashion in the Garden is more than just a show; it’s a reminder of the beauty that can be found in collaboration and in the spaces where fashion meets nature.
Q: Finally, how do you manage to stay so grounded and motivated in such a fast-paced industry?
A: I always remind myself of why I started—my love for fashion, my desire to uplift others, and my commitment to creating spaces where everyone feels valued. Staying connected to my purpose keeps me grounded. And, of course, I surround myself with a great team and take time to recharge when needed. Balance is key.
As our conversation draws to a close, it’s clear that Dr. Courtney A. Hammonds is not just a tastemaker in the fashion industry, but a visionary whose work continues to inspire and elevate those around him. Fashion in the Garden is sure to be a testament to his dedication to innovation, community, and the power of creativity.
