Some credit the American Indians for starting the tradition, while others believe the tradition comes from The Dominican Republic. Regardless of where the tradition began, it is still as popular today. However, if you are someone who wants to give cigars but does not know where to start, do not worry. Here is a guide on how to purchase a cigar as a gift.

Types of Cigars

If you are new to cigars, before heading out to the local cigar shop or a trusted online shop, learn about cigar types. There are main types: mild, medium, and full-bodied. The premier way to understand the differences is to try them yourself. If you do not smoke, find someone who does.

What to Look For in a Cigar

If buying in person, there are some things to look for when choosing a cigar. Hold the cigar you are considering buying. Check the firmness of the cigar. It should not be mushy. You want it to be firm, but not too hard.

Inspect the wrappers. Wrappers that look faded or lumpy are indicators that the cigar is no good. Inspect the cigar for any small tears and other imperfections.

Size Does Matter

If your gift recipient is new to cigar smoking, consider getting them a long, thin cigar. The longer, thinner cigars are more mild. Someone who is a seasoned smoker may enjoy a short, thick, more robust flavor cigar.
