Tatyana, what inspired you to focus on eyelash extensions, and how did you begin your career?
My journey into the world of eyelash extensions began when I moved to the USA. At that time, I faced challenges like language barriers and financial constraints, but I was determined to find my path. One day, I decided to treat myself to lash extensions and paid $100 for the service. It was at that moment that I realized it could be a rewarding career. I immediately signed up for a lash class and discovered my passion for this artistry.
What truly excites me about specializing in eyelash extensions is the joy I see on my client’s faces when they experience their noticeable transformations. The ‘wow’ effect when they see themselves in the mirror for the first time is deeply rewarding, and it inspires me to continue honing my skills and providing consistent, high-quality services that can make a difference in people’s lives. So, my love for eyelashes is where the story of the Lashes and the City Salon began…
What was the biggest challenge of starting a business in competitive New York, and how did you overcome it?
It was a bumpy ride. Like many immigrants, I struggled with a language barrier and had to translate everything, making the system feel daunting. Understanding taxes, insurance, and building a credit score seemed overwhelming. My initial goal was simply to survive and not give up!
Once I became more familiar with these processes, I faced new challenges, such as keeping the salon profitable and ensuring we provide a positive workplace for our employees and consistent service for our customers. The demands of NYC mean it’s a 24/7 job—if you’re not moving forward, you risk falling behind. Staying adaptable and committed has been key to navigating this ever-changing landscape.

What services does your salon offer, and do you plan to expand them in the future?
Our salon offers a diverse range of services designed to enhance our clients’ natural beauty, including lash extensions and lash lifts, along with brow shaping and tinting.
Additionally, we provide brow lamination, permanent makeup for brows and lips, and laser tattoo removal.
Currently, we are not planning to expand our service offerings further, as our focus is on perfecting the quality of what we already provide. Instead, we are considering plans to open more locations in New York City and explore opportunities in other cities across the USA.
In today’s competitive market, how do you maintain your salon’s success? What strategies have worked for you?
I would say that success comes from multiple factors working together. I regularly attend workshops and certifications, staying updated with trends, techniques, and products to provide top-tier service.
I also work on maintaining a strong brand, which includes a professional website, strategic targeting, and an active social media presence to connect with clients. This involves networking and collaboration, which can lead to new opportunities through joint events and promotions. I use online marketing effectively by sharing before-and-after photos, client testimonials, and engaging content to showcase my work and attract new clients. And of course, exceptional customer service is central to my approach. I build meaningful relationships, listen to client needs, and ensure they feel valued. Happy clients are often more likely to return and refer others.
Is running a beauty salon financially profitable? How do you manage high operational costs?
It can be profitable, especially during peak seasons. Services like eyelash extensions and other beauty treatments often offer high margins, potentially leading to a strong return on investment. However, managing operational costs is crucial for maintaining profitability.
To manage these costs, it’s important to create a solid business plan that includes budgeting for expenses like rent, supplies, and staff wages. Streamlining inventory management and buying in bulk may help reduce supply costs. Offering package deals or loyalty programs can encourage repeat business, further enhancing profitability. Additionally, regularly evaluating your pricing structure ensures it reflects service quality while remaining competitive.
We often discuss the benefits, but are there any potential downsides to this profession? For example, are there health risks from glue use or prolonged sitting?
Like any profession, there are possible side effects. There are health considerations, such as potential sensitivities to adhesive glue, but using high-quality, hypoallergenic products and conducting patch tests can help reduce risks. It’s also crucial to maintain good ergonomics to prevent discomfort from prolonged sitting.
Adding supportive seating and taking regular stretch breaks may improve your overall experience. By keeping your workspace clean and sanitized, you not only ensure safety but also help maintain your professional reputation.

What advice would you give to beginners who are planning to start in this field?
My advice to beginners entering the beauty industry, especially those interested in eyelash extensions, is to focus on continuous learning and practice. Invest time in quality training and certifications, as this foundational knowledge is important for building your skills and confidence.
Additionally, don’t underestimate the importance of building relationships with your clients. Providing excellent customer service and creating a welcoming atmosphere can help you retain clients and grow your reputation. Be open to feedback and always strive to improve your techniques and services.
Finally, stay adaptable and keep up with industry trends, as well as advancements in technology and products. The beauty industry is constantly evolving, and being willing to adapt can set you apart from the competition.
