At just 14 years old, emerging artist Shivali Chandrashekar is steadily carving out a space for herself in the world of music. A Los Angeles-born performer with deep Indian roots, she is introducing her sound to a wider audience with her genre-blending debut album, Echoes of the East. Co-created with her mother, acclaimed Indian classical vocalist Kamini Natarajan, the album is a distinctive mother-daughter collaboration that fuses the essence of Hindustani classical music with the pulse of deep house EDM.

Born Into Music, Raised With Purpose
Music has long been a part of Shivali’s world. Raised in a home filled with the sounds of ragas, chants, and traditional compositions, she was immersed in the richness of Indian music early on. Her mother, Kamini Natarajan—a respected performer and educator—served as her first guide and mentor.
Shivali’s foundation was further strengthened through formal training in Hindustani classical music beginning at age five. She has studied under notable vocalists, including Dr. Aashish Ranade and Dr. Arun Dravid, a senior disciple of the legendary Kishori Amonkar. Their mentorship has contributed to her growing confidence as a vocalist, helping her refine her technique and artistic voice.
“Music gives me the power to connect with my roots while also being myself,” says Shivali. “It’s how I express both sides of who I am—Indian and American.”

The Fusion of Cultures and Sounds
This duality is the heart of Echoes of the East. With support from veteran producer Ken Elkinson, known for his work across ambient, jazz, and electronic genres, the album marries classical Indian vocals with deep house rhythms to create a sound that is both contemporary and rooted in tradition.
Shivali played a central role in shaping the album’s sound. She co-composed tracks, performed lead vocals, and helped guide the creative direction of the project. Tracks like “Rising Waves” draw from raga Kamod to produce an uplifting and vibrant arrangement. “Regal Ascent” incorporates raga Darbari Kanada to reimagine the mythological story of Lord Krishna lifting the Govardhana mountain. And “Euphoric Rays” offers an energetic take on the sacred Gayatri Mantra, blending sargam vocalizations with electronic elements.
These songs showcase Shivali’s ability to navigate and integrate multiple musical traditions while honoring the depth of their cultural origins.
Inspiring a Generation
While Shivali’s talents are becoming more visible, what makes her journey compelling is her broader mission. Through her music, she hopes to encourage young people—particularly those who live between cultures—to embrace their identities with confidence.
“There’s sometimes pressure to fit into just one box,” she shares. “But I’ve learned that I don’t have to choose between cultures. I can create something new from both.”
This message is beginning to resonate with audiences and media alike. Early press coverage has highlighted her artistry alongside her thoughtful approach to identity and self-expression. She represents a generation that is increasingly global, creative, and true to itself.
In addition to her musical pursuits, Shivali is a dynamic middle schooler in California, balancing academics with a wide array of interests. She has studied the tabla for over four years, further enhancing her connection to Indian classical rhythms. Outside of music, she plays field hockey and participates in Mock Trial, where she hones her skills in public speaking, leadership, and critical thinking. These experiences reflect her well-rounded personality and the many ways in which she explores her potential.
A Family Affair
The collaboration with her mother adds an emotional depth to the project. For Kamini Natarajan, this is her twelfth album—but it carries special meaning. “This album is a bridge—between generations, between musical traditions, and between cultures,” Kamini says. “It reflects who we are as a family and as artists.”
Together, they have created not only a musical body of work but a shared experience that celebrates connection, creativity, and cultural legacy. What’s Next for Shivali?
With the March 21, 2025 release of Echoes of the East on all major digital platforms, Shivali is already looking ahead. She continues to study voice while exploring new creative avenues in songwriting, digital production, and visual storytelling. Her long-term goal? To craft immersive, cross-genre musical experiences that resonate with diverse audiences.
She’s also interested in using her platform to support youth empowerment and cultural learning. Whether through performances, workshops, or conversations, Shivali hopes to inspire others to embrace their backgrounds, speak their truth, and lead with purpose.
