Healthy Fruit and Veg Options for Your Dog

Pets are an essential part of the family, and like their human counterparts, they can also benefit from a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables. In this article, we will go over some of the best fruit and vegetable options for your furry friend, as well as the potential health benefits they can provide. It’s important to note that while fruits and vegetables can be a nutritious addition to your dog’s diet, they should not replace their regular meals. Always consult with your veterinarian before you make any changes to your pet’s diet. You might sometimes wonder, can dogs eat jicama, well the short answer is, yes. It is a safe vegetable to feed your dog and actually a great source of prebiotics.

1. Allow your dog time to adjust to new foods and watch for any digestive issues before introducing new foods.

It’s always a good idea to introduce new foods to your dog gradually, especially if they are not used to eating fruits and vegetables. Start by adding a small amount of the new food, like jicama to their regular meals and gradually increase the amount over the course of a week or so. This will give your dog’s digestive system time to adjust and can help to prevent any digestive issues.

Paying attention to your dog’s reactions to the new food is also essential. Some dogs may be more sensitive to certain types of fruits and vegetables, so it’s important to watch for any signs of digestive upset, such as vomiting or diarrhea. If you notice any adverse reactions, stop feeding the food immediately and consult with your veterinarian.

Overall, adding fruits and vegetables to your dog’s diet can be a great way to provide them with some extra nutrients and add some variety to their meals. Just introduce them gradually and pay attention to your dog’s reactions to ensure a smooth and safe transition.

2. Wash all produce thoroughly to remove any pesticides or dirt.

If you are wondering if your dog can eat jicama, It’s important to note to always wash your produce thoroughly, whether you are preparing it for yourself or your pet. Pesticides and dirt can accumulate on the surface of fruits and vegetables, and consuming them can lead to health issues.

To wash your produce:

  1. Start by filling a large bowl or sink with cold water.
  2. Add the produce to the water and gently agitate it to loosen any dirt or pesticides. If the produce is particularly dirty, you may want to use a produce brush to scrub it.
  3. Once you have washed the produce, drain the water and rinse the produce thoroughly under running water.
  4. Dry the produce with a clean towel or let it air dry before feeding it to your pet.

It’s also a wise idea to wash your hands before and after handling produce, especially if you are preparing it for your pet. This can help to prevent the spread of any bacteria or contaminants.

3. Dogs Cannot Digest Seeds, Pits, or Stems

Removing any seeds, pits, or stems from the fruits and vegetables you are feeding your dog is essential; they can be harmful or indigestible. Seeds and pits from certain fruits, such as apples, peaches, and plums, contain small amounts of toxins that can harm dogs if ingested. They can also cause an intestinal blockage, which can be life-threatening.

Similarly, stems and leaves from certain vegetables, such as tomatoes and potatoes, can also be toxic to dogs. These parts of the plant contain solanine, a compound that can cause digestive upset and, in large amounts, can be poisonous.

To be on the safer side, removing all seeds, pits, stems, and leaves from the fruits and vegetables you are feeding your dog is best. This will help to ensure their safety and prevent any potential health issues.

4. Cooked or Raw?

Some fruits and vegetables can be fed raw like jicama, while others should be cooked or pureed. Cooked or pureed produce can be easier for dogs to digest, especially if they have certain health conditions.

5. Don’t Overdo On the Treats

Fruits and vegetables should make up a small portion of your dog’s diet and should not replace regular meals.

Here are some healthy fruit and vegetable options for your dog:

Fruits:

  • Apples (without the seeds)
  • Bananas
  • Blueberries
  • Cantaloupe

Vegetables:

  • Jicama
  • Carrots
  • Green beans
  • Peas

Conclusion

Remember to introduce new foods like jicama gradually, in small amounts, and to wash all produce thoroughly. Remove any seeds, pits, or stems, as they can be harmful or indigestible for dogs. Some fruits and vegetables can be fed raw, while others should be cooked or pureed. Cooked or pureed produce can be easier for dogs to digest, especially if they have certain health conditions. Fruits and vegetables should make up a small portion of your dog’s diet and should not replace regular meals. Always check with your veterinarian before changing your dog’s diet.

Robert Johnson, BET founder labeled crowds pulling down statues as ‘borderline anarchists’

BET founder Robert Johnson expressed his distaste among the protester who are going beyond the limit and called them as ‘borderline anarchists’ taking down Confederate.  Robert Johnson said ‘black people laugh at white people’ who think tearing down statues and canceling TV shows is really their hidden desire to begin with. With the happenings, President Trump is bound to sign executive order protecting federal statues and monuments.

With an exclusive interview with Fox News, BET founder Robert Johnson stated that we should not romanticize those who are making efforts to above the Confederate and other statues across the nation as “borderline anarchists” — while challenging the notion that black Americans that blindly supports the overboard actions.

He clearly stated that people destroying statues “have the mistaken assumption that black people are sitting around cheering for them saying ‘Oh, my God, look at these white people. They’re doing something so important to us. They’re taking down the statue of a Civil War general that fought for the South,” Johnson said. “You know, black people, in my opinion, black people laugh at white people who do this the same way we laugh at white people who say we got to take off the TV shows.”

Robert Johnson, who happened as the country’s first black billionaire in 2001, has made a $14 trillion pitch for reparations to descendants of slavery. But he emphasized that the efforts and unjustifiable acts of  movement to take down statues, cancel TV shows and fire professors does nothing to close the wealth gap that will blur the line of slavery which truly happens in the society.

It’s “tantamount to rearranging the deck chairs on a racial Titanic,” Johnson told Fox News. “It absolutely means nothing.”

Additionally, Johnson also made his point that statue destruction that was torn down across the nation is worthless and meaningless to black Americans who could benefit much more from structural changes like economic equality and other positive and humane movements and causes to demand justice towards the pressing issue.

“Look, the people who are basically tearing down statues, trying to make a statement are basically borderline anarchists, the way I look at it. They really have no agenda other than the idea we’re going to topple a statue,” Johnson said. “It’s not going to give a kid whose parents can’t afford college money to go to college. It’s not going to close the labor gap between what white workers are paid and what black workers are paid. And it’s not going to take people off welfare or food stamps.”

Johnson rejected the backlash against public figures who say “all lives matter” instead of “black lives matter,” and the cancel craze targeting TV shows like “Dukes of Hazzard” and movie classics such as “Gone with the Wind.”

He also expressed his distaste with white celebrities for what he described as apologizing for their race in emotional social media spills or maybe to drawn attention of being a social empathy being.

“You know, that to me is the silliest expression of white privilege that exists in this country. The notion that a celebrity could get on a Twitter feed and say, ‘oh, my God, I am so sorry that I am white.’ I don’t find any black people getting on Twitter and saying, ‘Oh, I’m so sorry I’m black.’ And we got the worst problems. … My thing is: embrace being white and do the right thing.”

Johnson suggested white Americans need to ask black Americans what they really want.

“White Americans seem to think that if they just do sort of emotionally or drastic things that black people are going to say, ‘Oh my God, white people love us because they took down a statue of Stonewall Jackson.’ Frankly, black people don’t give a damn,” Johnson added.

Parents in Brazil Want Their Kids to Be Vaccinated, Brazilian President Disapproves

The desire for Brazilian parents to have their children aged 5 to 11 vaccinated is clear. One mother, who has gone through the trauma of experiencing an infection in her child, said it would put her mind at ease if kids were vaccinated.

According to information from the Ministry of Health, the deaths of at least 308 children aged from 5 to 11 have been caused by Covid-19 infections.

Covid has killed more children than meningitis and measles combined, quickly catching up on the number of deaths caused by road accidents. A pediatrician specializing in infectious diseases Marcelo Otsuka said that Covid is responsible for ending an alarming life expectancy among children.

Now that the Covid-19 vaccination campaigns for children aged 5 – 11 are underway, it offers a sigh of relief to many of Brazil’s parents. On Monday, the deployment for these vaccines began, with only a few weeks until school starts in February.

The number of people who believe in vaccinations for children is overwhelming. A recent survey from Datafolha Institute showed that 79% of respondents aged 16 and above agree with this idea, and it’s not surprising considering how much better protected they will be.

Some parents have been waiting a month to get their kids vaccinated, but it seems like the vaccinations aren’t coming fast enough for them.

It seems as though their own president, Jair Bolsonaro has caused these delays with his vaccination stance on the matter and lack thereof being vaccinated himself.

The Brazilian president has been widely criticized for his handling of the virus. This includes telling people not to get vaccinated, even though Brazil is seeing one of its worst coronavirus outbreaks in history. And now, he opposed the child vaccination campaign.

The Brazilian commander-in-chief has been highly critical of the decision to approve a Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for children in his country. He called it an “unbelievable” occurrence and threatened that any staff members behind this Anvisa move would face the public disclosure of their identities.

The identities of those staff were revealed when a Whatsapp group coordination was leaked by Congresswoman Bia Kicis, who also opposed childhood vaccinations and is a loyal supporter of Bolsonaro.

When confronted with this information, Kicis defended her actions by saying that she assumed it would be available in public during the trial of this issue earlier this month.

Brian Femminella is the CEO and Co-Founder of SoundMind. He is credited for creating a company that helps combine the power of music therapy and technology to help those with mental health illnesses. Aside from his work at SoundMind, Femminella is an accomplished rising senior at the University of Southern California where he is finishing up a double major in Cyber Security & Political Science before he commissions as a second lieutenant and heads off to graduate school.

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

It’s an honor to be here, so thank you for inviting me. I sit back and oftentimes reflect on who I am today, and especially what got me here. After being involved in the fire department, EMT services, military, and politics, I really found that my niche seems to be in doing something that immediately serves the public in one way or another. These involvements have and continue to keep me on my feet, and most importantly keep me humbled.

Can you tell us a story about the hard times that you faced when you first started your journey?

The journey is never easy, especially when it required me to move across the country to be the leader that I am today. For me, I admit that sometimes I pile too much on myself, especially doubt, at times. These doubts built up, they hurt, and they caused me to question my own life choices and if the path I was going down was the most beneficial to me. Just remember, taking risks is a learning process, and I learn something every day.

Where did you get the drive to continue even though things were so hard?

My drive came from my parents, as I watched them give up their lives for me. My parents always made me feel loved and accepted regardless of what was going on. I was the one who people would bet against, the kid that was “different” and I remember how much my parents fought for me. Despite all that was said, both my parents would truly in their hearts believe differently and have full confidence that I would prove those people wrong. Turns out, at least I hope, that they were right.

Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? What lesson did you learn from that?

When we first started SoundMind and we would speak to an investor or mentor, I would say a sentence starting with “oh ya um,” and whatever I said after that was me winging it in order to attempt to pretend like I understood the question. The best was when I was in New York and my co-founder was in Los Angeles and I told the guy “Oh yeah, I’m in Los Angeles too,” and when he said “Well, how come it’s dark on your screen and not on his?,” out of nerves, I responded “We are in different parts of LA,” which was when his face went blank. The morale of the story, don’t let your nerves take over and that having everything perfect for a mentor or investor is an unrealistic expectation.

What do you think makes your company stand out? Can you share a story?

Our ability to understand the people who we are working to help is irreplaceable. SoundMind is not a team of random people who came together and made an attempt to make a quick paycheck. We are a young ambitious team of college students and recent graduates who have all been impacted by mental illness and are directly involved in the communities that our app targets. If you have a passion for something and you have the tools up your sleeve to solve it, DO IT and prove people wrong.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

Find the community of people who have your back. Once you start, it is going to become your life and you will find yourself having to make decisions that could affect some of your personal relationships and life in general. This is tough, something that is not written in a “how to do life” book, and it’s a course that is unique to each person to navigate. My biggest piece of advice is to stay close to the people who support you.

Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

The community of people that I have found in Los Angeles has allowed me to truly feel like I found a second family. I want to shoutout Travis Chen, John Shepherd, Tyler Jensen, Jon Joei, Savannah Greene, Sydney Jaffe, Mitchell Bias, and Hayes Waycaster for being by my side through the highest highs and the lowest lows of my college journey. Their continued love and support has allowed me to feel confident in starting off my professional career in politics and as an entrepreneur. When I’m stressed, I can always count on them to practice their imitations of me (as they love to do) to make the day just a bit easier. To all of you, thank you for your loyalty and love.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I have been fortunate enough to use the success I have had thus far to share my story with thousands across the globe and also use my success at SoundMind to ensure we are reaching the people who need it the most. If we can turn around and say that SoundMind is able to help people, even in the slightest, we have succeeded.

Amidst the Drop in Suicide Cases in the Country in 2020, Americans Experience a Rise in Anxiety and Depression Symptoms

The initial blow of the pandemic in early 2020 was shocking and terrifying, to say the least. The world was at a standstill for the first few months, watching helplessly as the virus forced governments and economies on their knees. What health authorities and mental health experts initially thought would be a trigger to a staggering rise in suicide cases in the United States and other parts of the world surprisingly became a catalyst for a significant drop in suicide rates in the country. Government authorities revealed that suicide rates in the country dropped by a surprising 6%, the biggest drop seen in the last forty years. While this data may be hinting at a temporary victory, America is faced with a new challenge as a rise in symptoms of anxiety and depression disorders was recorded.

There is no conclusive theory that could explain the substantial decline in suicide rates in the country despite the effects of the pandemic on the economy, health, safety, mental state, and emotional well-being of people in general. There is a phenomenon, however, that experts suggest may be responsible for this significant drop in the suicide rate, one that is commonly observed during the early stages of war or a national disaster.

“There’s a heroism phase in every disaster period, where we’re banding together and expressing lots of messages of support that we’re in this together,” Dr. Christine Moutier, chief medical officer of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, reveals. “You saw that, at least in the early months of the pandemic.”

Another factor that may have contributed to this decline is the increase in the availability of telehealth services and other relevant services that were established to curb the country’s overwhelming suicide concern. Between the years 2000 and 2018, there has been a surprising rise in suicide cases, the highest since 1941. In 2019, however, improvements were observed, and experts credited this to successful mental health screenings and many suicide prevention initiatives around the country.

On the other hand, a Household Pulse Survey shows that 41.1% average share of adults reported symptoms of anxiety disorder and/ or depressive disorder as of January 2021, a big leap from the 11% reported from January to June 2019. Reporters further reveal that four in every ten adults in the United States have reported these symptoms during the pandemic, a significant rise from the previous one in ten adults who reported the same from January to June 2019.

There is also a rise in substance use. In June 2020, the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted a survey that showed 13% of adults reported new or increased substance use due to COVID-19-related stress. During that survey, 11% of adults expressed that they had thoughts of suicide in the past 30 days.

Interestingly, another reliable study revealed that 18% of individuals, to include people who did not have a past psychiatric diagnosis, who were diagnosed with COVID-19 were later diagnosed with a mental health disorder. Some of these diagnoses include anxiety and mood disorders.

The suicide rates may have gone down significantly, but many Americans living with a mental health condition are a long way from fully recovering from their state. There is still a pressing need to continue strengthening mental health advocacies and support programs to help patients get better. This initiative cannot be done by government authorities alone as a significant amount of support needs to come from communities where these individuals reside. As America heals, this generation can choose to contribute to that process and help people who are suffering silently.
