Skilled Worker Visa UK: Why the Employer’s Paperwork Decides Your Application

The Skilled Worker visa is the United Kingdom’s main work visa, the route for anyone taking a salaried job with a British employer, from engineers and accountants to chefs and teachers. It allows the holder to live in the UK with their family and, after five years, to apply for permanent residence.

An engineer with a London offer in hand usually assumes the visa is now a personal errand, a matter of filling in the forms, booking the biometrics, and waiting. The route actually works the other way around. The employer’s status, the certificate it issues, and the date on that certificate decide most of the outcome before the applicant uploads a single document. Understanding that inversion is the most useful preparation for the whole process.

Three requirements, all routed through the employer

The core checklist is short and employer-shaped. The company must be approved by the Home Office as a licensed sponsor. It must issue a certificate of sponsorship (CoS) carrying the details of the role. And the job itself must appear on the list of eligible occupations.

The practical consequence arrives early, during the job search itself. An offer from a company without a sponsor license is not a visa path, however generous the salary, which is why a would-be employer’s sponsor status is something candidates often confirm at the interview stage rather than after a contract is signed.

The applicant’s own requirements come after: proving knowledge of English across speaking, reading, writing, and understanding, and showing sufficient personal savings. A confirmed job offer is mandatory before applying, and without a sponsor the route does not open at all.

The salary floor moves with the job and the date

There is no single advertised minimum salary for the Skilled Worker visa. The floor depends on the type of work and on the date the certificate of sponsorship was assigned, which means two candidates in the same occupation can face different thresholds. The current figure for a specific role on a specific date is the detail that shapes any serious plan, and it carries more weight before a contract is signed than after.

Healthcare has its own door. Doctors, nurses, and other eligible health professionals may qualify for the Health and Care Worker visa instead, which is cheaper to apply for and exempt from the annual healthcare surcharge. Applying through the standard route when the health route is available means paying more than the case requires.

Predictable timelines, and a five-year horizon

The application can be submitted up to 3 months before the start date on the certificate. Decisions usually arrive within 3 weeks for applicants outside the UK and 8 weeks for those applying from inside, with faster decisions available for a fee in some cases. For a family relocation planned around school terms and lease dates, that predictability is genuinely valuable.

The long-term rules are equally clear. The visa lasts up to 5 years and can be extended without limit while the requirements continue to be met. After 5 years of residence, the holder can apply for settlement, formally indefinite leave to remain: the right to live, work, and study in the UK without further visa applications.

The rule that catches people mid-career

A job change on this visa is not an administrative footnote. Changing jobs or employers requires applying to update the visa before making the move, and skipping that step is one of the more common ways an otherwise clean five-year settlement clock gets broken.

Costs also extend beyond the application fee. Each applicant pays the healthcare surcharge for every year of stay, and a partner and children apply as dependants with their own fees. A realistic budget is a household budget, not an individual one.

Where legal help earns its place

Straightforward cases move on paperwork discipline alone. The files that benefit from a skilled worker visa solicitor are the edge cases: salary floors near the line, roles that straddle occupation codes, dependants with complications, or a job change mid-visa. Grape Law’s UK guides set out the requirements in plain language, and the firm covers both UK and US routes, which helps internationals compare the two systems before committing to either.

Rules and timelines were verified against gov.uk as of September 2026.
