After more than three decades in the construction industry, Jimmy Lehoux has learned that the biggest lessons aren’t just about lumber, concrete, or blueprints. As the founder of J-TEK Construction, Jimmy has completed more than 300 residential and commercial construction projects throughout Southern New Hampshire, earning the trust of homeowners, healthcare providers, businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations. Along the way, he’s learned that great construction is built on careful planning, clear communication, and a commitment to doing things the right way.
We sat down with Jimmy to discuss the lessons he’s learned over the past 30 years and the advice he believes every homeowner and business owner should hear before starting their next construction project.
Looking back over 30 years in construction, what’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
Jimmy Lehoux:
“Looking back, I’d say the biggest lesson is that planning really is everything. People often think construction starts when the crew arrives on site, but the truth is, the best projects begin weeks or even months before anyone picks up a hammer.”
“I’ve learned that clear communication, realistic budgets, defined expectations, and thoughtful planning solve most of the problems people associate with construction. When everyone understands the vision from the beginning, projects move more smoothly, decisions become easier, and the finished result is almost always better.”
“One thing 30 years in this industry has taught me is that success isn’t measured by how quickly a project gets built. It’s measured by how well it was planned before construction ever began.”
What’s the biggest mistake homeowners make before starting a remodeling project?
Jimmy Lehoux:
“I think one of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is looking at a remodeling project as an expense instead of an investment. Before you ever start thinking about finishes or fixtures, it’s important to ask yourself how you want the space to function not just today, but five, ten, or even twenty years from now.”
“The most successful remodeling projects solve real problems. Maybe it’s creating a more functional kitchen for a growing family, finishing a basement to add living space, or renovating a home so it’s easier to enjoy for years to come. When you focus on long-term value instead of short-term decisions, you’re much more likely to end up with a space you’ll still love years down the road.”
“That’s also where working with an experienced contractor early in the planning process can make a real difference. A good contractor doesn’t just build what’s on the plans. They help you think through your goals, identify opportunities you may not have considered, and make decisions that add value to your home for years to come.”
What advice would you give a business owner planning their first commercial renovation?
Jimmy Lehoux:
“Bring your contractor into the conversation early. One of the biggest mistakes I see is business owners spending months planning a project before involving someone who actually has to build it. A contractor can help you evaluate the design, identify potential challenges, develop a realistic budget and timeline, and make sure the project is being planned with construction in mind from day one.”
“We’ve had the opportunity to work with organizations like Bedford Ambulatory Surgical Center, The Medical Eye Center, Southern New Hampshire Radiology Consultants, Jumpp Chiropractic, Granite YMCA, the Diocese of Manchester, St. Peter Parish, and Affinity Investment Group. Every project has been different, but they’ve all reinforced the same lesson. Listen first, communicate often, and never compromise on quality.”
After 30 years, what do you hope people remember about J-TEK Construction?
Jimmy Lehoux:
“Early in my career, I probably thought construction was mostly about building. The longer I’ve been in this industry, the more I’ve realized it’s about earning people’s trust. The craftsmanship matters, but so does the way you communicate, solve problems, and stand behind your work.”
“I hope people remember that we did what we said we were going to do. Construction is about more than building something that looks good when it’s finished. It’s about building something that lasts, communicating honestly, and treating every client’s project with the same level of care we’d expect if it were our own.”
“Our reputation walks onto every jobsite before we do, and that’s something we’ve worked hard to earn over the last 30 years. Every project is an opportunity to strengthen that reputation, and we never take that responsibility lightly.”
What separates a good general contractor from a great one?
Jimmy Lehoux:
“I think a lot of people assume a general contractor’s job is simply to manage construction, but it’s much more than that. You’re coordinating schedules, managing subcontractors, communicating with clients, solving problems before they become expensive, and making sure every phase of the project comes together the way it should. Good construction doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because someone is paying attention to the details every single day.”
“Over the years, I’ve learned that craftsmanship is only part of the equation. You also have to be organized, communicate clearly, anticipate challenges before they become problems, and keep everyone working toward the same goal. That’s what keeps projects moving and gives clients confidence throughout the entire process.”
